Book of Divorce (at-Talaq)
Narrated `Ubaid bin `Umar:
I heard `A’ishah saying, “The Prophet (ﷺ) used to stay for a long while with Zanab bint Jahsh and drink honey at her house. So Hafsa and I decided that if the Prophet (ﷺ) came to anyone of us, she should say him, “I detect the smell of Maghafir (a nasty smelling gum) in you. Have you eaten Maghafir?’ ” So the Prophet (ﷺ) visited one of them and she said to him similarly. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Never mind, I have taken some honey at the house of Zainab bint Jahsh, but I shall never drink of it anymore.” So there was revealed: ‘O Prophet ! Why do you ban (for you) that which Allah has made lawful for you . . . If you two (wives of Prophet) turn in repentance to Allah,’ (Surah At-Tahrim 66 ayah 1-4) addressing A’ishah and Hafsa. ‘When the Prophet (ﷺ) disclosed a matter in confidence to some of his wives.’ (Surah At-Tahrim 66 ayah 3) namely his saying: But I have taken some honey.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5267
NOTE 📝
1. Imam al-Bukhari collected this hadith under the chapter heading “O Prophet! Why do you forbid that which Allah has allowed to you…? The Prophet ﷺ was the best of people in his treatment of his family and his wives, and his wives, out of their deep love for him, would show feelings of jealousy toward him, just as other women do toward their husbands.
2. In another hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, it is mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ drank honey in Hafsah’s house, while in this narration it says he drank it in Zaynab’s house. The scholars reconcile this apparent difference by saying the events could have happened more than once – so there is no problem with multiple reasons leading to the same situation. However, the stronger opinion is that it was Zaynab’s house because the Prophet’s ﷺ wives were divided into two parties: Aishah, Hafsah, Sawdah, and Safiyyah in one group, and Zaynab bint Jahsh, Umm Salamah, and the others in the other. This supports the view that Zaynab was the one who offered the honey, as she was a rival to ‘A’ishah. This is the conclusion of al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in the commentary of this hadith in Fathul Baari as well as other scholars.
3. This hadith teaches that feelings of jealousy are natural in women by disposition, and it shows that declaring things lawful or unlawful is solely by Allah’s command, even the Prophet ﷺ did not have the right to forbid something lawful or permit something forbidden on his own. It also highlights that if someone swears to abandon something good and permissible, whether food, drink, clothing, or relating with one’s spouse(s) unduly, they should break that oath and offer the required expiation for it.
O Allah, bless our marriages, place love and mercy between us, reconcile our hearts, and protect us from Shaytan, misunderstandings, divisions, and acrimonious situations … Ãmeen
