Supporting the Family (an-Nafaqaat)
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah said, ‘O son of Adam! Spend, and I shall spend on you.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5352
NOTE 📝
1. Imam al-Bukhari collected this hadith under the chapter heading “The superiority of providing for one’s family . Islam encourages charity and spending in the way of Allah, and it makes clear that whatever a person spends will return to him many times over in this world and the Hereafter. Moreover, what is with Allah is more lasting than what a person hoards for himself.
2. In his explanation of this hadith as collected in Riyadh as-Saliheen, Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn stated that loss (talf) is of two types: tangible and intangible. Tangible loss occurs when wealth itself is destroyed, such as by fire, theft, or disaster. Intangible loss happens when the blessing is removed so that a person does not truly benefit from his wealth in life. The Prophet ﷺ taught that what a person spends for the sake of Allah is truly his wealth, as it will be found before him on the Day of Judgment, while what he leaves behind is the wealth of his heirs. Therefore, a believer is encouraged to spend in ways that please Allah, assured that Allah will replace and provide for him, as seen in the saying: “O son of Adam, spend and I will spend on you.” The best use of wealth is in righteous causes such as charity, helping the poor, building mosques and schools, and supporting good works, while wasting it in sinful pleasures leads to ruin. – Sharh Riyadh as-Saliheen, Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen
3. The Shaykh further explained the hadith “There is no envy except in two cases.” The first is a person whom Allah blesses with wealth and grants the ability to spend it righteously, which makes him deserving of admiration. The second is one given wisdom, meaning knowledge, who applies it in judgment and teaches it to others. People differ in their response to wisdom: some are given knowledge but do not even benefit themselves, like the Jews who knew the truth but rejected it; others practice it for themselves but do not share it; and the best are those who live by it and teach others. The worst are those given knowledge but whose knowledge becomes a burden due to neglect, while the ignorant who remain open to learning are in a better state. Thus, the true blessing lies in using wealth and wisdom in ways that please Allah.
O Allah! Provide us with lawful (halal), pure, and sufficient sustenance. Enrich us with Your grace, needing nothing from anyone besides You. Make us content with Your provisions, and place blessings in our family and children. Ãmeen
Jummat Reflections – 28th Safar 1447AH 🌙
Alhamdulillah, we gather this blessed Friday with hearts full of gratitude. May Allah (SWT) accept our prayers, forgive our shortcomings, and guide us on the straight path.
In this month of Safar, often associated with trials, let us seek Allah’s protection from harm, His mercy in our affairs, and His barakah in our homes and nation. May He remove every hardship, replace fear with peace, and strengthen our faith with sabr (patience) and tawakkul (trust in Him).
Ya Allah, make us among those whose deeds You love, whose prayers You answer, and whose lives You bless with goodness in this world and success in the Hereafter.
Ameen.

Keep your faith strong, be patient, and believe that Allah will answer your prayers in the best way, at the right time. And if they tell you about the details of the impossible, tell them about the prayers and the certainty of the answer.
