Book of Wedlock, Marriage (Nikaah) – contd.
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If a man Invites his wife to sleep with him and she refuses to come to him, then the angels send their curses on her till morning.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5193
NOTES 📝
1. Imam al-Bukhari collected this hadith under the chapter titled ‘ If a woman deserts her husband’s bed. Marriage is a lawful relationship between spouses, and Islamic teachings have clarified the rights and responsibilities of each party. This hadith highlights the significance of a husband’s right over his wife and prohibits a wife from disobeying her husband. It also serves as evidence of the acceptance of angels’ supplications, as the Prophet ﷺ warned about their consequences.
2. Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen explains in his commentary of this hadith that a wife must respond to her husband’s call to intimacy unless she has a valid excuse, such as illness or any other legitimate hindrance(s) recognized in the Shari’ah. If she refuses without cause, the angels curse her until morning, and according t9 another narration, Allah remains displeased until her husband is satisfied. This highlights the gravity of neglecting marital obligations, as Allah’s anger is even more severe than a curse. However, this applies only if the husband fulfills his marital responsibilities; if he neglects her rights (such as providing her clothing and expenses in honorable way and according to his capacity, not abandon her except within the home, not strike her face, not use offensive words, etc.), she may withhold his in return, based on Qu’ran principles of fairness (see Surah Al-Baqarah ayah 194, Surah an-Nahl ayah 126). – Sharh Riyadh as-Saliheen, Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen
3. The Shaykh also stresses that kindness in marriage is mutual. Just as a wife is expected to fulfill her husband’s needs, the husband should also be considerate of his wife’s emotional and physical needs when she desires intimacy, as commanded in the Qur’an: “And live with them in kindness.” Sharh Riyadh as-Saliheen, Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen
O Allah! Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring those who will be the comfort of our eyes and make us Imams (leaders) for the Muttaqoon (pious). Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance … Ãmeen
