Today is the 9th of Muharram, one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar, especially within the sacred month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar year. This is a special reflection and prayer package for the 9th of Al-Muharram, leading into the 10th (Ashura):
🌙 9th of Muharram – A Day of Reflection, Fasting & Mercy
🕋 Significance of the 9th of Muharram:
The 9th and 10th of Muharram are highly recommended days for voluntary fasting, following the practice of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who said:
“Fasting the day of Ashura (10th Muharram) expiates the sins of the previous year.”
— (Sahih Muslim)
He ﷺ also said:
“If I remain alive till next year, I will certainly fast on the 9th as well.”*
— (Sahih Muslim)
Hence, fasting both the 9th and 10th is a Sunnah — to differentiate from the practice of the Jews who only fasted on the 10th, and to gain additional reward.
🤲🏽 Powerful Du’ā for the 9th of Muharram
“Ya Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, as we fast and reflect on this sacred day of Muharram, purify our hearts, forgive our sins — past and present — and protect us from the trials of this world and the next.
Grant us strength like that of Prophet Musa (AS) when he stood before Pharaoh, and patience like Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he endured rejection.
Ya Allah, lift the burdens upon our nation, heal our wounded hearts, guide our leaders with justice, and unite the Ummah upon truth and mercy.
Make this year a turning point for peace, barakah, and divine upliftment in our lives and in the life of our beloved country.
Accept our fasts, our prayers, our silent hopes — and write us among those whom You love, forgive, and honour.
Ameen Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.”_

A special Hadith related to the 9th day of Muharram, connected to the practice of fasting during Ashura (10th Muharram):
Special Hadith for the 9th of Muharram
“When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fasted on the day of Ashura and commanded the people to fast it, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.’ So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
‘If I live to see the next year, I will certainly fast on the ninth day also.’”
— Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1134
Explanation:
This Hadith is the basis for the Sunnah of fasting on both the 9th and 10th of Muharram. The Prophet ﷺ intended to distinguish the Muslim practice from that of the Jews, who only fasted on the 10th (the day Allah saved Prophet Musa and the Israelites from Pharaoh).
Although the Prophet ﷺ passed away before the following Muharram, his intention set the recommended practice for Muslims:
Fast both the 9th and 10th to follow the complete Sunnah.
