Book of Virtues of the Qur’an

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ordered me to guard the Zakat revenue of Ramadan. Then somebody came to me and started stealing from the foodstuff. I caught him and said, “I will take you to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)!” Then Abu Huraira described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), “(Please don’t take me to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you.) When you go to your bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi, (Surah al-Baqarah ayah 255) for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Shaytan will not be able to come near you till dawn.” (When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard the story) he said (to me), “He (who came to you at night) told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Shaytan.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5010

NOTES 📝

1. Imam al-Bukhari collected this hadith under the chapter heading of ‘The superiority of Surah al-Baqarah’. Ayat Al-Kursi is among the greatest verses of the Qu’ran, and this hadith highlights some of its merits. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ entrusted him with safeguarding the zakat al-fitr funds and provisions. Zakat al-fitr is the charitable donation Muslims give before Eid al-Fitr, typically consisting of wheat, dates, or other staple foods of the local community.

2. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said in ash-Sharh al-Mumti’, “This hadith is evidence that the liar may say the truth and that the enemy may give advice, but the advice of the devil in this case is not (given with the intention of) real advice, but, rather, out of fear of being handed over to the Prophet ﷺ.”

3. The hadith highlights several important lessons. Firstly, it emphasizes the excellence of Ayat Al-Kursi, which provides protection against evil spirits (Shayatin) for those who recite it. Additionally, it stresses the importance of accountability and permission in handling entrusted responsibilities. The hadith also mentions the existence of Jinn, their ability to communicate with humans, and their mischievous nature, including theft and deception. Furthermore, it warns that abandoning remembrance of Allah, especially during sleep, leaves one vulnerable to Shaytan’s influence. The hadith also show the legitimacy of seeking knowledge from those who may not practice it themselves. Lastly, it emphasizes the responsibility of a trustee (Wakil) to safeguard entrusted assets.
