Start and stop Ramadhan Fast when the crescent is sighted
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (رضيالله عنه):
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, ” Start fasting after you have seen it (i.e. the new crescent of Ramadhan) and end the fast (at the end of the month) when you see it. If it is cloudy and cannot be seen, then estimate its sighting (i.e. presume that Sha‘ban lasted for thirty days).” Agreed upon. Muslim narrated, ” If it is too cloudy to be seen then presume that it (Sha’ban) lasted for thirty days.”In another narration by al-Bukhari, ” wait, until thirty days of it (Sha’ban) have passed.”
وَعَنِ اِبْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا [ قَالَ ]: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اَللَّهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -يَقُولُ: { إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَصُومُوا, وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا, فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ } مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ 1 . وَلِمُسْلِمٍ: { فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا [ لَهُ ] 2 . ثَلَاثِينَ } 3 . وَلِلْبُخَارِيِّ: { فَأَكْمِلُوا اَلْعِدَّةَ ثَلَاثِينَ } 4 .

1. This hadith from Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) establishes the ruling for determining the beginning and end of Ramadhan based on the sighting of the moon. The Prophet ﷺ instructed that fasting should commence upon sighting the crescent of Ramadhan, and fasting should end upon sighting the crescent of Shawwal. However, if the sighting is obstructed by clouds or other barriers, then the month should be completed as thirty days. This principle ensures certainty in worship and follows the natural lunar cycle without reliance on speculation or astronomical calculations.
2. The hadith highlights several important rulings: First, sighting the moon is the primary method for determining the start and end of the month, and calculations alone are not sufficient. Ibn al-Mundhir reported consensus among scholars that fasting is not obligatory based on astronomical calculations alone. Second, if the crescent is not visible due to clouds, the previous month (Sha’ban or Ramadhan) must be completed as thirty days. Additionally, this hadith confirms that the lunar month can only be either twenty-nine or thirty days, never more or less. Finally, those in remote areas or places where moon sighting is not actively monitored should personally attempt to sight the moon or rely on trusted reports to determine the beginning and end of fasting.
3. Om his own part, Shaykh Al-Albani emphasizes that this hadith establishes moon sighting as the sole basis for determining Ramahdan’s start. If sighting is obstructed, the phrase “faqduru lahu” means completing Sha’ban as thirty days, ruling out reliance on calculations. He highlights the often-overlooked importance of confirming Sha’ban’s start, as uncertainty affects determining its completion. Citing ‘A’ishah (رضي الله عنها), he notes that the Prophet ﷺ paid special attention to Sha’ban’s crescent, ensuring accuracy in fasting. Thus, Muslims must prioritize moon sighting for both Sha’ban and Ramadhan to avoid errors in worship.

BisimiLah! O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may ward off (evil) (Q2:183). May Allah (SWT) in His Infinite Mercy accept you and your family’s Ibadat and make you, All, Pius during and after the Fasting Period … Juma’at Kareem.

A Special Jumu’ah Prayer Before Ramadan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
O Allah, the Turner of hearts,
As we stand before You on this blessed Jumu’ah, the last before the sacred month of Ramadan, we humble ourselves in gratitude and submission.
Ya Allah,
Grant us the honor of witnessing Ramadan in good health, with strong faith, and a heart filled with sincerity. Purify our souls, cleanse our sins, and prepare us for a month of worship, fasting, and devotion.
Ya Rahman,
Bless us with the strength to fast with ease, to pray with devotion, and to recite the Qur’an with deep reflection. Let this Ramadan be a means of drawing closer to You, of earning Your mercy, and of seeking Your forgiveness.
Ya Ghaffar,
Forgive our past shortcomings, overlook our sins, and grant us a fresh start. Heal our hearts from pain, our bodies from sickness, and our minds from worries.
Ya Razzaq,
Provide for us and our families, and ease the burdens of the needy. Let us be a source of kindness, generosity, and support to those around us.
Ya Mujib,
Answer our du’as, bless our loved ones, and protect us from harm. Grant peace to our nation, unity to our ummah, and justice to the oppressed.
Ya Noor,
Fill our hearts with Your light, our homes with barakah, and our paths with guidance. Let this Ramadan be our best yet, and may we emerge from it forgiven, renewed, and accepted in Your sight.
