Book of Wedlock, Marriage (Nikaah) – contd.
Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama:
I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) who was on the pulpit, saying, “Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughira have requested me to allow them to marry their daughter to `Ali bin Abu Talib, but I don’t give permission, and will not give permission unless `Ali bin Abi Talib divorces my daughter in order to marry their daughter, because Fatima is a part of my body, and I hate what she hates to see, and what hurts her, hurts me.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5230
NOTES 📝
1. Imam al-Bukhari collected this hadith under the chapter heading titled Attempt to prevent the daughter’s jealousy. Imam al-Bukhari derived from this hadith that a father is permitted to withhold consent for his son-in-law to marry another woman out of concern for his daughter and due to protective jealousy. The Prophet ﷺ did not treat his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) with special legal privileges; he upheld justice equally among all Muslims, as shown when he declared he would cut Fatimah’s hand if she stole, emphasizing the universality of his rulings. His objection to Ali marrying the daughter of Abu Jahl was not a general prohibition of polygyny, but a specific refusal due to the emotional harm it would cause Fatimah by placing the daughter of Allah’s enemy in the same household.
2. al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani stated in his commentary of this hadith that Ibn al-Tin explained that the soundest interpretation of this incident is that the Prophet ﷺ forbade combining his daughter (Fatimah) with the daughter of Abu Jahl in marriage because doing so would cause him harm, and harming the Prophet ﷺ is unanimously forbidden. When the Prophet ﷺ said, “I do not make the lawful unlawful,” he meant that had Fatimah not been his wife, marrying the daughter of Abu Jahl would be permissible. However, combining both wives, which would lead to Fatimah’s distress and thus the Prophet’s distress, is not acceptable. Some scholars suggested that it was technically allowed for Ali, but the Prophet ﷺ forbade it out of consideration for Fatimah’s feelings. Ali complied in obedience to the Prophet ﷺ. – Fathul Baari, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani
3. From this, it is understood that if Fatimah had agreed to the marriage, the Prophet would not have stopped Ali. The narration establishes that causing harm to those whom the Prophet is harmed by is forbidden, as harming the Prophet is strictly prohibited in Islam. Since he clearly stated that what hurts Fatimah hurts him, anyone who causes her distress is effectively harming the Prophet. This hadith also supports the legal principle of blocking the means (sadd al-dhara’i), as polygyny is generally lawful, yet the Prophet forbade it here due to its harmful consequences in this particular case (of combining in marriage the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and that of the enemy of Allah). – Fathul Baari, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani

Special Hadith for Jumu’ah (Friday) that holds deep spiritual value:
Hadith on the Virtue of Jumu’ah
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it, Adam was created. On it, he was made to enter Paradise, and on it, he was expelled from it. And the Hour (Day of Judgment) will not occur except on Friday.”
— Sahih Muslim, Hadith 854
Another Hadith – Rewards for Jumu’ah Preparation
The Prophet (SAW) said:
“Whoever performs ghusl on Friday, comes early, walks and doesn’t ride, sits near the Imam, listens attentively and does not engage in idle talk, will have for each step he took the reward of a year’s fasting and praying (Qiyam al-Layl).”
— Abu Dawood & Tirmidhi
These Hadiths highlight the immense blessings of Friday and encourage Muslims to treat it with reverence — through early preparation, prayer, listening to the khutbah, and making dua.
