#Today Jummat 13th of Shawwal 1446 AH (Friday 11th April 2025)

Book of Wedlock, Marriage (Nikaah) – contd.

Narrated Anas:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) took an oath that he would not visit his wives for one month, and he sat in an upper room belonging to him. Then, on the twenty ninth day he came down. It was said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! You had taken an oath not to visit your wives for one month.” He said, “The (present) month is of twenty-nine days.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5201

NOTES 📝

1. Imam al-Bukhari collected this hadith under the chapter heading titled Men are protectors and maintainers of women.. In his Sharh of this hadith, Shaykh Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen stated that the hadith explains the incident where the Prophet ﷺ made an oath (ʾīlāʾ) to withdraw from his wives for a month. The term “ʾīlāʾ” refers to a sworn oath, and the Prophet ﷺ did this due to a disagreement with his wives – highlighting his human experience of family challenges. Though he was the best of people, he also faced disputes, especially within his household, yet responded with patience and kindness, as exemplified in his saying, “The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best among you to my family.” During this time, he secluded himself in an upper chamber made of palm tree trunks, and when his companions visited him during his illness, he led them in prayer while sitting. – Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen

2. The companions later reminded him that he had sworn to remain away for a full month, but he came down to his family on the 29th day. He responded by explaining that the month can be 29 days, pointing to the lunar nature of the Islamic months. The use of “the month” (al-shahr) here refers specifically to that particular month (i.e., for that incident), not months in general. This explanation aligns with another Hadith where the Prophet ﷺ gestured with his fingers to show that a month could be either 29 or 30 days depending on moon sightings. – Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, Ibn Al-Uthaymeen

3. The benefits from this hadith touches on the fish (Islamic jurisprudence) ruling of ʾīlāʾ (oath-based separation). It is permissible for a man to swear not to approach his wife for up to four months, but only if there is a valid reason, such as for discipline—not out of cruelty or harm. If he ends the oath early and returns to his wife, he must expiate by offering the Kaffarah (expiation) for breaking an oath (see Surah al-Ma’idah ayah 89). However, if the oath extends beyond four months without reconciliation, the wife has the right to request the annulment of the marriage. This balance reflects the fairness and limits established in Shari’ah (Islamic law) to protect both parties in a marriage. – Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, Ibn Al-Uthaymeen

O Allah! Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring those who will be the comfort of our eyes and make us Imams (leaders) for the Muttaqoon (pious). Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance … Ãmeen

Book of Wedlock, Marriage (Nikaah) – contd.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

One morning we saw the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) weeping, and everyone of them had her family with her, I went to the mosque and found that it was crowded with people. Then `Umar bin Al-Khattab came and went up to the Prophet (ﷺ) who was in his upper room. He greeted him but nobody answered. He greeted again, but nobody answered. Then the gatekeeper called him and he entered upon the Prophet, and asked, “Have you divorced your wives?” The Prophet, said, “No, but I have taken an oath not to go to them for one month.” So the Prophet (ﷺ) stayed away (from his wives) for twenty nine days and then entered upon them.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5203

NOTES 📝

1. Imam al-Bukhari collected this hadith under the chapter heading titled The decision of the Prophet (ﷺ) not to share the beds with his wives and to stay away. This hadith is similar to that of Anas bin Malik and Umu Salamah treated in the past two days. In this narration, Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) recounts a day when the wives of the Prophet ﷺ were found weeping, each surrounded by members of her family. Ibn Abbas went to the mosque and found it filled with people, all seemingly concerned about the situation. Then, Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and went up to the Prophet ﷺ, who was secluded in his upper room. Umar greeted him three times but received no reply until a guard informed the Prophet ﷺ, and then Umar was allowed to enter. Umar asked whether the Prophet had divorced his wives, and the Prophet ﷺ responded that he had not, but had taken an oath not to approach them for a month.

2. From this hadith, we learn that it is permissible for a husband to separate from his wife as a form of disciplinary action when a situation arises that justifies it. The Prophet’s ﷺ action shows that such separation does not necessarily imply divorce but can be a temporary measure to manage a tense domestic situation or restore balance in the relationship. This also reflects the Prophet’s ﷺ patience and emotional intelligence in handling household issues without resorting immediately to irreversible steps.

3. In a related fatwa, the scholars stated: “Whoever forsakes his wife for more than three months, if that is because of wilful defiance and ill conduct on her part, i.e., she disobeyed her husband with regard to what she is obliged to fulfil of marital duties towards him, and persisted in that after he admonished her and reminded her to fear Allah, may He be exalted, and reminded her of the duties that she owes to her husband, then he may forsake her in bed for as long as he wants, in order to discipline her so that she will fulfil her duties towards her husband willingly. The Prophet ﷺ shunned his wives, and stayed away from them for a month.” – Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah (20/261, Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz, Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez Aal ash-Shaykh, Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd),

O Allah! Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring those who will be the comfort of our eyes and make us Imams (leaders) for the Muttaqoon (pious). Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance … Ãmeen

Title: “Remaining Steadfast After Ramadan: Sustaining Taqwa and Good Deeds”

1. Praise and Gratitude:
Begin with praises of Allah (SWT), who allowed us to witness and benefit from Ramadan. Remind the congregation of the virtues of Ramadan and the blessings of completing it.

2. Sustaining the Spirit of Ramadan:
Emphasize that true success lies not just in fasting during Ramadan but in continuing good deeds after it ends. Quote from the Qur’an:

> “Indeed, those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remain steadfast – the angels will descend upon them…”
(Surah Fussilat, 41:30)

3. Post-Ramadan Worship:
Encourage the continuation of voluntary fasts such as the six days of Shawwal, regular recitation of Qur’an, giving charity, and praying Qiyam (night prayer).

4. Consistency in Taqwa:
Remind worshippers that the goal of Ramadan was to attain Taqwa (God-consciousness) and that it should reflect in our daily lives — in our character, dealings, and worship.

5. Du’a and Reminders:
Make du’a for acceptance of Ramadan efforts, for the Ummah’s unity, peace in the nation, and protection from fitnah and corruption.
