Too slow, diminished fighting spirit’: NFF blames Dessers, Troost-Ekong for Super Eagles’ draw with South Africa

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has singled out striker Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong for criticism following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein.

Nigeria, desperate for maximum points to stay in contention for the tournament, fell behind in the 25th minute when Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Calvin Bassey later restored parity with a well-timed header just before half-time.

In a post-match statement, NFF spokesperson Dr. Ademola Olajire described Dessers’ display as ineffective, noting that the forward struggled to keep up with the pace of play, failed aerially, and offered little attacking spark. Dessers, who was substituted at half-time, had also underperformed in the previous game in Uyo, the federation added.

The NFF further criticised Troost-Ekong, saying his own goal temporarily deflated the team’s morale and gave the Bafana Bafana momentum.

However, Bassey earned praise for his determination and resilience, with the federation highlighting his role in dragging Nigeria back into the contest.

Despite that equaliser, the NFF lamented the Eagles’ lack of sharpness in the second half, stressing their inability to convert chances into goals.

With the result, Nigeria remain third in Group C with 11 points from eight matches, six points adrift of leaders South Africa. The Super Eagles must now beat Lesotho and Benin Republic while hoping rivals slip up to keep their slim qualification hopes for the 2026 World Cup in North America alive.
