Defense Headquarters said Operation Hadin Kai troops arrested one Mohammed Maki, who claims to be a Chadian, coordinating a kidnapping union and terrorist groups in the northeast of the country.
The Acting Director, Defense Media Operation, Brig.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, revealed this while briefing reporters on military operations across the country between June 3 and June 16 on Thursday in Abuja.
Onyeuko said the troops carried out several raid operations, extensive airstrikes, responded to distress calls as well as repelled and foiled terrorist attacks in the region during the period.
He said the Air Task Force carried out airstrikes in Damboa on June 3, dislodging several terrorists and inflicting significant damage to their logistics facilities.
According to him, the troops also repelled the terrorist attacks on the city on the same day, when several fighters of the ISWAP sect, including one of their commander named Umar Tela, were neutralized.
“Other places where troops have recorded significant results are Gujba in Yobe, Magumeri in Borno and Mubi in Adamawa where troops raided terrorist hideouts on June 4 and 5.
“During these operations during the period under review, several terrorists were neutralized, while some escaped with gunshot wounds.
“Many of their armed trucks and other logistics facilities were also destroyed in the process.
“The operations of the troops also led to the arrest of certain terrorists and kidnappers on June 5, including the head of a notorious kidnapping union in the North-East area, named Mohammed Maki, who is a Chadian.
“The troops also recovered large caches of weapons and ammunition, large quantities of gasoline and kerosene in jerry cans during the operations,” he said.
Onyeuko said the troops ‘superior operational commitments continued to degrade the terrorists’ operational capabilities and deny them freedom of operation in the northeast theater of operations.
He said the troops remained determined to take decisive and adequate action to further curb the activities of terrorists and bandits and other vices across the country.
According to him, the military high command also salutes the efforts of the troops for their resilience and their unwavering commitment.
“We wish to encourage the public to support our efforts by providing credible and timely information that will facilitate our proactive engagements,” he said. (NOPE)
