President Donald Trump on Wednesday responded with a mix of bemusement and concern after Russian drones entered Polish airspace, a direct challenge to NATO at a time of escalating tensions with Moscow.
“What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!” Trump wrote in a brief Truth Social post, offering little clarity on how Washington might respond.
The overnight incident — which saw more than a dozen Russian drones cross into Poland before being shot down by NATO fighters — marked a major escalation in Russia’s war on Ukraine and triggered Poland to invoke NATO’s Article 4, demanding urgent consultations among allies.
The incursion came just 26 days after Trump’s high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which so far has produced no visible progress toward ending the war. While Trump has floated the possibility of new sanctions on Moscow, his administration has yet to unveil specific measures.
Trump spoke Wednesday with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who later said the call confirmed “allied unity.” Polish officials signaled they may request the deployment of additional U.S. assets, including a Patriot missile battery along the border with Ukraine and faster delivery of F-35 fighter jets.
European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UK officials, also pledged support for Poland, while the EU prepared an additional sanctions package.
The incident marked the first time NATO forces fired in direct response to Russian aggression since the Ukraine war began. Jets from Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and NATO’s multinational force intercepted the drones.
Despite Trump’s reassurances during Nawrocki’s recent Oval Office visit — when he pledged U.S. support and even hinted at sending more troops to Poland — questions remain over what his cryptic “here we go” remark signals as the crisis unfolds.
