Trump: Why we reject US threat on Nigeria — China

China has rejected threats by former US President Donald Trump to take military action against Nigeria, declaring its firm opposition to any external interference in the country’s internal affairs.

Speaking through Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, China described Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner” and affirmed its support for the country’s right to determine its own development path.

“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities,” Mao said. “We oppose any country’s interference in other nations’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights.”

Trump had earlier warned that the US might cut off aid or take military action against Nigeria over alleged genocide against Christians.

However, US lawmakers Gregory Meeks and Sara Jacobs condemned Trump’s statement as “irresponsible and reckless,” saying the situation in Nigeria is complex and not driven by religion alone. They argued that violence in the country has affected both Christians and Muslims, calling Trump’s remarks “a reckless response to distorted facts.”

The lawmakers added that cutting aid would worsen humanitarian conditions and undermine ongoing development programs in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has dismissed allegations of genocide, blaming religious extremists for spreading divisive narratives. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said President Tinubu is calmly addressing the situation through diplomatic engagement and improved security strategies.

“These extremists want to divide Nigeria, but now is the time for unity and nation-building,” Idris said, adding that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and equal protection for all faiths.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also said the National Assembly would discuss Trump’s comments with the executive arm of government, describing the issue as one that requires a coordinated foreign policy response. He stressed that insecurity in Nigeria affects people of all religions and should not be framed as a faith-based conflict.

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), accused the US of pursuing its own interests, claiming that Washington is seeking an opportunity to establish a new military base in Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to unite and reject external manipulation.

ECOWAS also dismissed Trump’s genocide claims, describing them as false and dangerous. The regional body said extremist violence across West Africa targets people of all religions and called for global cooperation to fight terrorism, not division.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states urged citizens to view Trump’s comments as a reminder to promote peace, unity, and mutual respect. “We should not allow anyone to twist his words to divide us further,” said CAN Chairman Rev. John Hayab.

Similarly, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) rejected any threat of US military intervention, calling it an “unsolicited interference.” The group urged the Nigerian government to urgently address insecurity and prosecute militias responsible for killings across the country.

The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) also appealed for international partnership rather than threats of invasion. Its Executive Secretary, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, said the crisis in Nigeria affects both Christians and Muslims, noting that over 20,000 civilians have been killed since 2020.

Former Deputy Ambassador to the US, Hassan Mohammed, described Trump’s threat as unprecedented and unlawful, saying the 1998 International Freedom of Religion Act does not grant the US the right to wage war over religious issues.

He called for dialogue and diplomacy, urging both nations to resolve differences peacefully.Headline news
