‘TRUMP WILL BE GONE IN THREE YEARS’: TOP DEMOCRATS TRY TO REASSURE EUROPE

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio took center stage at the Munich Security Summit on Saturday, aiming to reassure European allies that, despite recent strains under Donald Trump, US-Europe relations remain strong. While Rubio’s remarks did not fully ease all concerns, they signaled continuity in America’s commitment to its transatlantic partners.

Other American politicians also attended the summit, offering perspectives on the current political climate. California Governor Gavin Newsom reminded audiences, “Donald Trump is temporary. He’ll be gone in three years,” highlighting a sense of optimism among Democratic leaders who may seek the 2028 presidential nomination.

Many American officials underscored that the US will remain a reliable partner to Europe. Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire stated, “The reason we’re here is to provide reassurance that we understand how important our European allies are.” Republican Senator Thom Tillis echoed the sentiment, noting that the US and Europe are not in a “civil war” and advising allies to avoid getting caught up in American political rhetoric.

The summit comes amid ongoing tensions stemming from Trump’s foreign policy decisions, including tariffs on trading partners and controversial territorial proposals. While these actions have raised European unease, US leaders at Munich emphasized stability and cooperation.

Domestic concerns were also addressed. Virginia Senator Mark Warner warned that Trump’s proposals on nationalizing elections and implementing strict voter ID requirements could impact the fairness of upcoming elections. Senators Mark Kelly and Elissa Slotkin, recently targeted in an unsuccessful indictment attempt related to a video urging US soldiers to disregard “illegal” orders, described the nation as “going through something profound,” expressing confidence that challenges would be overcome.
