Two Nigerian Correctional Service Officers Suspended for Passport Fraud

The Federal Government has taken disciplinary action against two Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) personnel who attempted to illegally obtain an international passport for an inmate.

The suspensions were announced Saturday by NCoS Public Relations Officer and Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar in an official statement.

How the Scheme Was Uncovered

According to Abubakar, the misconduct was discovered through the Nigeria Immigration Service’s automated passport application system and broader institutional reforms. The detection resulted from enhanced collaboration between agencies under the Ministry of Interior.

The incident, which took place approximately two weeks ago, represented a clear violation of established protocols and procedures.

Official Response and Disciplinary Action

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Service Board, led by Interior Minister Dr. Olubumni Tunji-Ojo, authorized the suspensions as part of the necessary disciplinary measures.

Controller General of Corrections Sylvester Nwakuche emphasized the service’s unwavering dedication to maintaining discipline, transparency, and professionalism across all custodial facilities nationwide.

The NCoS issued a stern warning that any personnel found guilty of misconduct, corruption, or sabotage will face dismissal from the service.

This case highlights the government’s commitment to preventing corruption within the correctional system and maintaining the integrity of passport issuance procedures.
