UKRAINE PRESIDENT ZELENSKYY LASHES OUT AT UN SECURITY COUNCIL OVER IRAN’S STRAIT OF HORMUZ BLOCKADE

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticised the United Nations Security Council for what he described as its failure to respond effectively to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the situation threatens global stability and economic security.

In a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Zelenskyy said, “It is unfortunate that the UN Security Council has once again failed to demonstrate effectiveness and act decisively in the face of such a global threat as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by the Iranian regime.” He added that no country should be allowed to obstruct crucial maritime routes or compromise the security of dozens of nations through attacks on freedom of navigation.

Drawing parallels with Ukraine’s conflict with Russia, Zelenskyy recalled Moscow’s previous attempts to disrupt Ukraine’s economy by blocking its ports and civilian shipping. “We faced a similar challenge in the Black Sea, and we overcame it through decisive action, not inaction,” he said.

The Ukrainian leader warned that a prolonged crisis in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to wider global disruption. “The Strait must remain open to all vessels that support essential economic supply chains and ensure the smooth flow of international trade,” he said.

Zelenskyy emphasised that regional voices must be respected and that the aspirations of Middle Eastern and Gulf nations for peace are critical. “Peace and security in this region directly affect market stability, predictability, and the cost of living in every country,” he said.

He urged the UN Security Council to take stronger action, stating, “Such crises and this conflict must not be prolonged. The world needs a functional and decisive Security Council to address pressing global security challenges.”
