US Embassy Issues Security Alert Over #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest in Abuja

On October 17, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja issued a security alert warning American citizens of potential disruptions and violence during a planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest on October 20, 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory.

The protest, announced by activist Omoyele Sowore on October 9 via X, demands the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been detained since June 2021 on terrorism charges.

The Embassy cautioned that the demonstration, set to march toward Aso Rock Villa, may cause roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible clashes with police around Eagle Square and the Central Business District. U.S. citizens were advised to avoid protest areas, limit movement, keep children home from school, and excuse domestic staff commuting from outside Abuja.

Additional recommendations included avoiding crowds, monitoring local news, maintaining a low profile, and staying vigilant in public spaces like shopping centers and places of worship. The Embassy urged citizens to review personal security plans and keep phones charged for emergencies. The alert reflects the U.S. practice of issuing warnings to ensure citizen safety amid potential unrest.
