The United States House Subcommittee on Africa on Thursday opened a public hearing to review President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), a classification that places the West African nation under heightened scrutiny for alleged violations of religious freedom.

Lawmakers convened at 5 pm to examine the implications of the designation, which, if upheld by the Senate, could pave the way for sanctions against Nigerian officials found to be involved in acts of religious persecution.
The CPC status may also restrict certain forms of US bilateral assistance to Nigeria.
