Tensions flared in South Africa’s Eastern Cape following protests over claims of an alleged coronation, with demonstrators taking to the streets to express outrage.
The protest, reportedly organised by members of ActionSA, was driven by concerns that the supposed coronation violated the province’s sovereignty and constitutional processes. Party leaders insisted that matters relating to traditional leadership must follow due legal procedures.
What began as a demonstration soon escalated into violence in parts of KuGompo City. Protesters were seen setting vehicles and buildings ablaze, with some of the targeted properties believed to belong to foreign nationals. Reports also indicated incidents of looting, including the ransacking of a local butchery.

As tensions rose, some demonstrators called for government intervention, warning that failure to act could lead to further unrest. Others made more extreme demands, including calls for the deportation of Nigerians allegedly linked to the situation.
However, confusion continues to surround the issue. Authorities and traditional leaders in South Africa have dismissed claims that any coronation of a foreign monarch took place. The Nigerian High Commission also clarified that the gathering in question was purely a cultural event, not a political or traditional installation.
According to the commission, the event was meant to celebrate Igbo heritage and identity, similar to cultural festivals and traditional ceremonies commonly held within Nigerian communities abroad. It stressed that such gatherings carry no political authority or territorial implications.
The situation has since sparked wider debate about misinformation, cultural misunderstanding, and the need for restraint. While some groups have condemned the alleged act, others have warned against allowing unverified claims to fuel violence and xenophobia.
Authorities are now being urged to restore calm, investigate those responsible for the unrest, and ensure that both citizens and foreign nationals are protected as tensions gradually ease.
