‘We miss her a lot’: Obasanjo, family attend Stella Obasanjo’s 20th memorial service

On October 25, 2025, former President Olusegun Obasanjo joined family and dignitaries, including former Governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, in Abeokuta to mark the 20th memorial of former First Lady Stella Obasanjo. Held at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the service celebrated her life of service.

John Abebe, Stella’s younger brother, remembered her as a calming presence whose constant smile eased family grief, notably after their eldest brother’s death. “She was someone you couldn’t get angry with,” he said, noting how her positivity transformed their parents’ home. Olumuyiwa Obasanjo, her son, now in his late 40s with a 17-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son, recalled her infectious laughter, kindness, and strict yet caring nature, shaping his life’s principles.

Stella Obasanjo passed away on October 23, 2005, at 52 during a cosmetic surgery in Spain. She was renowned for her philanthropy, women’s rights advocacy, and anti-poverty efforts. “We miss her a lot,” Abebe added, reflecting on her enduring impact.
