WHY WE’LL PROCEED WITH WEDNESDAY’S NATIONWIDE PROTEST – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that its nationwide protest scheduled for 17 December is intended to highlight Nigeria’s escalating insecurity and press government and stakeholders into urgent action.

Speaking to journalists in Gombe on Saturday after a meeting with Governor Inuwa Yahaya to discuss labour matters, NLC President Joe Ajaero said the demonstration seeks to demand decisive government intervention against rising insecurity, which he noted now affects every Nigerian, regardless of social or professional status.

Ajaero described banditry and violent crimes as alien to Nigerian culture, stressing the need for collective condemnation to reverse what he called a dangerous trend threatening the nation.

He warned that insecurity is harming the economy and discouraging both local and foreign investment.

“Our protest is aimed at drawing attention to the daily impact of insecurity on workers and investors, including kidnappings and killings,” Ajaero stated.

He referenced a recent tragic incident in Kebbi, noting, “The victim killed was a teacher, and some of the kidnapped were children of workers.”

Ajaero added that the protest is also intended to show public backing for authorities in tackling insecurity.

“Government should understand that Nigerians are standing with them to ensure the necessary actions are taken because this situation is unacceptable and must end,” he said.

He further called for unified action, emphasizing that kidnappings for ransom undermine national values and social cohesion, and urged stakeholders to prioritize the safety and security of citizens.
