The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved the allocation of land to members of the FCT Council of Traditional Rulers and also waived all statutory fees attached to the titles.
Speaking during the ceremony in Abuja, Wike explained that the decision followed a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at recognising and supporting indigenous communities in the territory.
He noted that traditional rulers deserve such recognition, especially given their role in maintaining peace and stability.

“We cannot deny the fact that there are indigenous people who were here before the creation of the FCT,” Wike said. “The President believes we must honour them. If those who promote peace are not appreciated with land, then who should be?”
In addition to the land allocation, the minister praised the traditional rulers for ensuring what he described as the most peaceful Area Council elections in the FCT’s history. He also promised to provide utility vehicles to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities more effectively.

Wike further highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across satellite towns, including major road developments linking areas such as Airport Road to Kuje, Bwari to Zuba, and parts of Apo, Karshi, and Basan Jiwa.
On the issue of fees, he stressed that it would be unfair to demand payments from traditional rulers for lands they have occupied for generations, hence the decision to grant a full waiver.
Responding on behalf of the council, its chairman, Adamu Yunusa, who is also the Ona of Abaji, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and pledged continued support for its policies.
The move is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen collaboration between the government and traditional institutions, which play a key role in grassroots leadership and community development.
