Wike Launches Solar Streetlights with Anti-Vandalism Tech in Abuja

On Thursday, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike kicked off the “Light Up Abuja” project, unveiling solar-powered streetlights fitted with surveillance features to curb vandalism and boost security. The initiative, part of agreements signed with Chinese firms CCECC and CGC during Wike’s September 2024 trip with President Bola Tinubu to the China-Africa Cooperation Summit, aims to illuminate the capital by its 50th anniversary in February 2026.

Wike, speaking at the unveiling, highlighted the dire state of Abuja’s lighting when he took office in August 2023, with 80% of the city plunged in darkness due to broken or stolen streetlights. “Darkness fuels insecurity,” he said, noting frequent sabotage of cables and poles that drained maintenance budgets. The new streetlights, equipped with anti-vandalism technology, are designed to deter theft and identify culprits, a feature Wike praised as a game-changer.

Under the deal, CCECC and CGC will maintain the streetlights for four to five years, sparing the government constant repair costs. “No more maintenance files crossing my desk,” Wike said, adding that the companies are also tasked with ensuring the lights’ security. He acknowledged potential pushback from those who profited from the old, failing system but vowed to stay the course.

The project is a step toward making Abuja shine like global cities, Wike said, while addressing the city’s security challenges through better lighting and smarter infrastructure.
