WIKE: POLL OUTCOME HAS SHOWN RULING PARTY, REAL OPPOSITION

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that the outcome of Saturday’s Area Council elections reflects Nigerians’ awareness of the ruling party and the country’s “real opposition.”

Speaking on national television and radio, Wike commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the peaceful conduct of the polls, noting that the elections demonstrated public confidence in the current administration and the democratic process promoted by the Federal Government.

“The peaceful conduct of the election is a testament to the commitment of the people of the FCT to democracy and good governance,” Wike said. “This election has indeed shown that Nigerians now know the ruling party and the real opposition party.”

He praised residents for turning out to vote peacefully and thanked security agencies for maintaining order, while also commending INEC for conducting a credible and transparent process that reinforced public trust in Nigeria’s electoral institutions.

Wike added that the results reflected the developmental strides in the FCT under President Tinubu, highlighting the impact of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged all winners to serve their constituents with dedication and commitment.

PDP Claims Credible Opposition Role

Despite winning only one of six chairmanship seats, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described its performance as evidence of its continued relevance as a credible opposition. The party congratulated Mohammed Kasim, winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council election, and praised supporters for a resilient performance.

The PDP highlighted its councillorship victories across the FCT as proof of grassroots support and reaffirmed that it remains a dependable alternative platform. The party also commended INEC and the police for maintaining peace and called for the resolution of any gaps identified during the election.

Presidential Aspirant Sees Resurgence

PDP presidential aspirant Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim described the FCT election outcome as a sign of the party’s resurgence ahead of the 2027 general elections. He congratulated members for their performance under challenging circumstances and expressed optimism that a more united PDP would perform even better in future polls.

“The PDP is a resurgent party. In spite of leadership disputes and pressure, the people stood firmly by the party,” Hashim said, noting that councillorship victories across the FCT further demonstrate the party’s grassroots support.
