Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu’s appointment as the 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has been widely welcomed, not just for his rank, but for his battlefield experience and proven leadership. A decorated commander who has faced insurgents on the frontlines, Shaibu brings a blend of operational expertise, academic rigor, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s security.
Battle-Tested Leadership
Shaibu’s authority stems from lived experience. From the Lake Chad region to the Sambisa Forest, he has led troops against Boko Haram and ISWAP in some of Nigeria’s most challenging theatres. His courage is legendary, exemplified during the daring Wulgo operation, where he pressed on despite being wounded. Such experiences have forged a leader whose decisions in combat are informed by firsthand knowledge of danger, fatigue, and the stakes of every mission.
A Soldier’s Soldier
Troops respect Shaibu because he has shared their hardships, understanding fear, exhaustion, and the need for faith in the mission. His presence at the helm offers reassurance that Nigeria’s security is in the hands of someone who has lived the realities of modern insurgency and proven his resilience under fire.

Strategist and Reformer
Beyond the battlefield, Shaibu combines strategy with institutional reform. A mechanical engineer by training, he holds multiple advanced degrees, including in strategic studies and public administration, and has attended the Harvard Kennedy School. He has commanded key formations, served in peacekeeping missions, and earned numerous decorations, including the Purple Heart Medal, Distinguished Service Star, and Meritorious Service Star.
As COAS, Shaibu is expected to enhance intelligence-led operations, improve joint-force synergy, and continue transforming the Army’s readiness and professionalism. His journey reflects a leader forged by combat and dedicated to service—a symbol of resilience and national pride.
