‘With our Heavy Investment, we Deserve to Hold Some Positions’: Ohanaeze Decries Alleged Marginalisation of Igbos in Lagos LG Elections

The Lagos State chapter of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organization has condemned the persistent marginalisation of Igbos during local government elections in the state, despite their substantial contributions to its economy.

Dr. Solomon Ogbonna Aguene, President of the group, raised the concern on Saturday while addressing journalists at his Ikoyi residence amid the ongoing local government polls. He described the exclusion of Igbos from the electoral process as a recurring injustice.

According to Aguene, Igbos living in Lagos are consistently denied their democratic rights to vote and contest for elective positions at the local government level. He emphasized that the issue has been a pattern in every election cycle, irrespective of their visible role in the economic and political landscape of the state.

“Do you know that Igbos residing in Lagos are often denied the right to vote?” he asked. “This is not just about the current election—it has been the same story during every election period. Igbo residents are also barred from contesting for positions such as Local Government Chairman or Councillor.”

He acknowledged that while there are a few Igbo individuals serving as vice chairmen in some local governments, their overall political representation remains grossly inadequate.

“It is safe to say democracy in Nigeria is not functioning as it should,” he said. “True democracy upholds equity, justice, and fairness—but what we have is a system where opportunists hijack power. This is why there is widespread voter apathy in Lagos and across the country; Nigerians are tired of voting with no real change.”

Aguene further stated that Igbos are among the most prominent investors in Lagos and should be allowed to hold leadership positions reflective of their impact on the state’s development.

He also criticized the general state of governance in Nigeria, noting the hardship faced by many citizens, including essential workers such as journalists and security personnel, who struggle to provide for their families.

The reality in Nigeria is grim. Governance appears to serve only a privileged few while the majority of citizens continue to suffer,” he lamented.
