The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed the recovery of the body of a woman who fell into a 170-foot well in the Ijegun area of Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred at the front of an uncompleted one-storey building located on Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop, within the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA). The building, which is still under construction, comprises six two-bedroom flats on a 648-square-metre plot.
According to the Fire Service, a distress call was received at 7:34 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025. Emergency responders from the Ejigbo Fire Station arrived at the scene and discovered that an adult woman had fallen into an uncovered well on the premises.
Due to the depth of the well and the technical challenges involved, the recovery operation required the support of multiple agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force and the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU). After nearly ten days of coordinated efforts, the woman’s body was finally retrieved on Thursday, July 10.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and her remains were handed over to SEHMU officials, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) remained on standby. Officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, were also present to oversee the recovery operation.
Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and commended all agencies involved for their collaboration. She added that the Nigerian Police Force has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
