‘YOU ARE BEING MISLED’: FG WARNS NIGERIANS AGAINST RECRUITMENT TO FIGHT IN RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR, OTHERS

The Federal Government has cautioned Nigerians against being recruited to take part in wars abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that some Nigerians are being lured through deceptive offers, including promises of high-paying employment, security roles, educational opportunities, or expedited migration.

Reports indicate that victims are sometimes coerced into signing military service contracts, often written in foreign languages, before being transported to conflict zones, where their travel documents may be confiscated upon arrival.

The warning was issued in a statement by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry, on Sunday.

“We are deeply concerned about reports that Nigerian citizens are being misled into joining armed conflicts overseas. These actions put lives at risk and may contravene both Nigerian and international laws concerning mercenary activities. Citizens must avoid any offer involving combat abroad outside approved government frameworks,” the statement read.

Security sources and investigative reports suggest that recruiters use tactics such as signing bonuses, promises of high monthly salaries, and even incentives like foreign citizenship to attract young Nigerians. Travel is often arranged through tourist or non-military visas, deceiving recruits into dangerous environments.

The government stated that measures are being taken to address the threat. Nigerian missions abroad have been instructed to increase consular vigilance and provide timely advisories to citizens, while domestic authorities collaborate with international partners to investigate recruitment networks.

Ebienfa further urged: “Parents, guardians, and community leaders must actively educate young Nigerians about the dangers of deceptive foreign recruitment schemes. All overseas employment or study offers should be verified through official channels, and suspicious activities reported immediately.”

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians’ welfare and dignity both at home and abroad, emphasizing that citizens must never be exploited or trafficked into foreign conflicts.
