‘You cannot train policemen in this place’: Presidential committee inspects deplorable police college in Rivers

The Presidential Committee on the Overhaul and Revamp of Training Institutions for Security Agencies has pledged to deliver a comprehensive plan for the rehabilitation of the Nigeria Police Training School in Nonwa-Tai, Rivers State.

The committee, chaired by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, visited the abandoned facility on Thursday as part of a nationwide assessment tour following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to urgently evaluate and restore police and NSCDC training institutions.

The inspection revealed a disturbing level of decay — vandalised buildings, broken infrastructure, and overgrown parade grounds.

Governor Mbah, who was accompanied by Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, former Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba, and AIG Olatunji Disu, said the committee is working with consultants to produce a detailed plan for the renovation.

“The president personally inaugurated this committee because he recognises that we are at a security crossroad,” Mbah stated. “You cannot train 30,000 new police personnel in such deplorable conditions.”

Governor Fubara commended President Tinubu for his commitment to reforming the security sector, describing the visit as a step toward restoring professionalism and morale in the force.

In his remarks, Governor Abiodun noted that the committee has just one month to submit its report and that its members have been divided into northern and southern teams to speed up inspections.

“What we have seen here in Nonwa-Tai is not different from Lagos, Jos, or Maiduguri,” Abiodun said. “The president wants results — and fast. This is clear evidence of political will.”

The Nonwa-Tai Police Training School, established in the 1970s, last trained recruits in 2022. Despite several past renovation promises, little progress has been made.

The committee’s visit rekindles hope that long-overdue reforms in Nigeria’s police training infrastructure may finally be realised.
