Obi, Saraki, Kwankwaso Congratulate Adeleke on Osun Governorship Victory
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Ademola Adeleke on his victory in the Osun State governorship election.
Obi commended the people of Osun State for their peaceful participation in the election and wished Adeleke success as he begins his second term in office.
“I commend the people for their passion and peaceful participation. I wish Governor Adeleke continued success as he continues to serve them,” Obi said.
He also praised Osun voters for demonstrating the power of citizens to determine who governs them, saying the people had “spoken with courage and clarity.”
Obi particularly commended youths in the state for what he described as their peaceful efforts to defend their democratic mandate. He said the election offered important lessons ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The lesson from Osun is clear. Democracy is strongest when citizens are alert, conscious of their civic responsibility, and determined to ensure that their votes count. Every genuine vote must be respected, and every lawful mandate must be protected,” he said.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki also congratulated Adeleke, describing the outcome as his victory in the governorship election.
Similarly, former Kano State Governor and 2027 New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, congratulated Adeleke and described him as a friend.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Sunday, Kwankwaso commended Osun voters for exercising their democratic rights and reaffirming the power of the people’s mandate.
“As a leader of the opposition and a committed democrat, I commend the people of Osun State for exercising their democratic rights and reaffirming the power of the people’s mandate,” he said.
The Independent National Electoral Commission’s State Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, declared Adeleke the winner in the early hours of Sunday.
Adeleke secured victory in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while his closest rival, All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji, won 11. African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.
The victory is particularly significant for Adeleke, who contested the election on the Accord platform after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party amid a prolonged internal crisis that resulted in the party conducting its governorship primary without him.
He subsequently secured the Accord ticket and successfully defended his governorship mandate outside the party on whose platform he was elected in 2022.
