The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is reportedly preparing to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives representing Agege Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections, marking a shift from his earlier governorship ambition.
Obasa, who had initially expressed interest in succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is said to have intensified political consultations across the state through the revival of the Mandate Group, a political structure linked to President Bola Tinubu. The move was aimed at strengthening his influence within the ruling party and building support for a possible governorship run.
However, party insiders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos revealed that the political calculation changed after President Tinubu, in consultation with the Governance Advisory Council, reportedly backed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred governorship candidate.
Following that development, Obasa is said to have shifted his ambition toward the Lagos West Senatorial District, where he was reportedly considered as a possible contender against incumbent Senator Idiat Adebule, a former deputy governor.
His potential senatorial bid, however, reportedly faced resistance from sections of the APC national leadership and its women’s wing, who pushed for Adebule to retain her position, citing her role as the only female senator from the South-West and her importance to gender representation in the National Assembly.
In response to the internal tensions, sources claimed President Tinubu advised Obasa to instead contest for the House of Representatives seat for Agege Federal Constituency, currently occupied by first-term lawmaker Wale Ahmed.
Obasa has since reportedly begun quiet grassroots mobilisation within Agege, consolidating support for his new political direction.
The development highlights ongoing political realignments within the Lagos APC as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
