2027: DELE MOMODU COURTS ADC TICKET, EYES ATIKU RUNNING MATE SLOT

Veteran journalist and former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has called on the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to consider him as the party’s vice-presidential candidate alongside its presidential flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.

Momodu argued that a joint ticket featuring Atiku from the North and himself from the South would present a strong political balance capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while also appealing to a wider national base.

He made the appeal in a statement shared on his social media pages, where he also published a graphic presentation promoting what he described as an “Attraction of Atiku Abubakar/Dele Momodu ticket” for the 2027 race.

In his proposal, Momodu highlighted personal attributes such as media influence, youth appeal, education, and cross-regional background, describing himself as a unifying figure with both Edo and Osun heritage.

Atiku Abubakar emerged as the ADC presidential candidate in May after defeating former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the party’s primary election. The process, however, has continued to generate internal disagreements within the party.

Following the primary, Atiku reportedly engaged in reconciliation efforts with some aspirants, including visits to Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen, amid speculation over possible choices for his running mate.

Despite the political consultations, no official decision has been announced regarding Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate, with reports suggesting discussions may include figures such as serving governors and other prominent political actors.

Momodu, who previously contested the presidency in 2011 and 2023, said the 2027 election is likely to be a major contest between Atiku and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while acknowledging the possibility of a third-force candidate emerging.

He urged the ADC to adopt a more strategic and inclusive political approach, warning that internal divisions could weaken the party’s chances if not properly managed.

Momodu also called for a return to issue-based politics rooted in ideology and national unity, rather than personal rivalry and political tension.
