The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed that the ban on the production and sale of sachet alcoholic beverages will take full effect starting December 31, 2025.
This was made known by Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of NAFDAC’s FCT Directorate, during a press briefing on Monday in Abuja.
Azikiwe clarified that the temporary lifting of the ban, which was approved by the Ministry of Health, is only in place until the end of 2025.
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by December 31, 2025. After this date, full enforcement of the ban will begin,” he said.
He explained that the temporary suspension was intended to give manufacturers and regulatory bodies time to align and prepare for an orderly transition.
NAFDAC also cautioned the public against misinformation suggesting that the ban had been scrapped entirely.
“The minister granted this temporary relief to allow for collaboration between regulators and manufacturers, ensuring a more effective implementation process,” Azikiwe added.
The agency said it is conducting nationwide public awareness campaigns and has engaged distributors to emphasize responsible alcohol sales practices.
“We have sensitised distributors, particularly on ensuring alcohol is not sold to anyone under the age of 18, as clearly indicated on product packaging,” he said.
NAFDAC also commended the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) for supporting its public education initiatives.
As part of the policy, sachet alcoholic drinks below 200ml will be phased out completely after December 2025, in line with the agency’s efforts to regulate alcohol consumption and safeguard public health.
