The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the successful launch of Unity Shipping Worldwide, a historic shipping line established through a public-private partnership.
In a congratulatory letter addressed to the president via the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola, the union praised the initiative as a major step forward for Nigeria’s maritime industry. The venture brings together Stena Bulk, a leading Swedish global shipping company, and Caverton, a Nigerian marine and aviation logistics firm.
Part of the letter reads:
“We extend our warm regards to the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and congratulate you on the successful establishment of Unity Shipping Worldwide — a Nigerian shipping line built on a strong public-private partnership between Stena Bulk and Caverton.
The union described the development as a reflection of President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, crediting it to the minister’s visionary leadership and strategic execution.
“We note with pride the leadership you have shown in advancing the maritime and blue economy. The provision of a $700 million cabotage fund to support indigenous shipowners and the creation of a globally competitive shipping line through this partnership are monumental achievements,” the union added.
The MWUN emphasized that the new shipping line would bring unprecedented growth to the maritime and oil & gas sectors, positively impacting workers and boosting the national economy.
“As a maritime union with thousands of members serving on oil and gas platforms, we eagerly anticipate the ripple effects this strategic initiative will generate across Nigeria’s economy.”
The union concluded by commending the president and minister for their commitment to empowering local stakeholders and expanding Nigeria’s presence in the global shipping industry.
