LAGOS TO SANCTION ESTATES OVER LAYOUT VIOLATIONS

The Lagos State Government has issued a final warning to estate developments operating in the state without approved layout plans.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, who led an on-the-spot warning and sensitisation exercise across parts of the Eti-Osa corridor recently, stated that the warning followed the expiration of the grace period earlier given to all flagged estates to regularise their planning documents.

He explained that the government has continually stressed the importance of obtaining proper approvals before embarking on land subdivision, sales or construction. Despite previous notices, the affected estates continued to operate in violation of planning regulations, and the government will no longer tolerate developments that hinder orderly and sustainable urban growth.

The Commissioner emphasised that the final one-week deadline for erring estates is their last chance to submit layout plans and secure necessary approvals.

He added that after the deadline, sanctions will be enforced, ranging from heavy fines to demolition depending on the severity of the violation. He also urged the public, especially prospective homebuyers, to verify the planning status of any estate before investing, noting that due diligence is crucial to prevent financial loss.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing planning laws to protect the environment and ensure orderly development across the state.
