The United States Embassy in Abuja has cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing a high potential for protests in the Federal Capital Territory amid escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran.
In a security alert posted on X, the embassy warned American citizens of “potential demonstrations” in Abuja and strongly recommended that all U.S. citizens in the city remain in their residences throughout the day.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that there is a high potential for protests in Abuja tomorrow, March 4, 2026, due to the current conflict with Iran,” the statement read.
“Previous protests by some groups have resulted in violent clashes between the groups and Nigerian security forces. The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4.”
The embassy urged Americans to avoid protest areas and crowds, exercise heightened caution, and monitor local media for updates.
The alert follows a global security advisory issued by the U.S. government on Monday, urging increased caution due to the evolving situation in the Middle East, including potential disruptions to air travel.
The warning comes after coordinated U.S.-Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian facilities, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials, triggering Iranian missile and drone retaliation across the Gulf region.
Despite the cancellations, the embassy confirmed that its consular section in Abuja and the consulate general in Lagos remain open for emergency services.
U.S. citizens were encouraged to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Programme (STEP) to receive security notifications and monitor the embassy website for further updates.
