ELIGIBLE MEN IN U.S TO BE DRAFTED INTO MILITARY STARTING DECEMBER 2026

Starting December 2026, all eligible men in the United States will be automatically registered for the military draft, a move aimed at simplifying the current self-registration process and cutting administrative costs.

The Selective Service System (SSS), which keeps a database of individuals who could be called up in a national emergency, submitted a proposed rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30. While men aged 18 to 25 are already required to register, automatic enrollment was mandated under the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act in December 2025.

The SSS explained that the change “transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,” improving efficiency and reducing bureaucracy. The proposal is still under review and awaiting final approval.

The U.S. has not held a military draft since the Vietnam War, relying on voluntary enlistment since 1973. However, the Selective Service framework, reinstated by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, remains active in case of a national emergency, allowing the registry to supply personnel and alternative service options for conscientious objectors if authorized by Congress and the President.

Recent tensions, including the ongoing situation with Iran, have raised questions about a possible draft, although a fragile two-week ceasefire is currently in place. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified in March that a draft “is not part of the current plan,” but noted that President Donald Trump “keeps his options on the table.” Any reinstatement would require Congress to amend the Military Selective Service Act.

Failure to register remains a criminal offense, with penalties including fines up to $250,000, prison terms up to five years, loss of federal student aid, state benefits, government employment, and, for immigrants, potential loss of U.S. citizenship. Under the proposed rule, men would be automatically registered within 30 days of turning 18.

Women remain excluded from the draft, despite repeated legislative attempts to include them, which have consistently been removed before final approval of defense bills.
