The support is aimed at providing urgent relief to millions of people affected by displacement, insecurity, and economic hardship, including both displaced populations and host communities in hard-to-reach areas.

According to the EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS spokesperson Modestus Chukwulaka, the funding will be distributed across several regions. €75 million is allocated to the Central Sahel, over €72 million to Chad, and €33 million to Nigeria. Additional funding includes €22 million for the Central African Republic, €16.6 million for Cameroon, €4.8 million for Mauritania, and more than €6 million for coastal countries, alongside €6.4 million for regional humanitarian initiatives.

European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib described the region as being under severe pressure from overlapping crises driven by conflict, poverty, hunger, instability, and climate shocks.

She emphasized that for many affected people, humanitarian assistance remains essential for survival, providing access to food, clean water, healthcare, shelter, and education.

The European Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and strengthening resilience in affected regions.

In Nigeria, ongoing insecurity in the North-West continues to worsen humanitarian conditions, displacing thousands and increasing the need for urgent assistance.
