ROYAL THRONES UNDER SCRUTY: ARREST OF KWARA MONARCHS RAISES FRESH QUESTIONS OVER LOCAL COMPLICITY IN BANDITRY

The arrest of traditional rulers in Kwara State over alleged links to kidnapping and banditry has sent shockwaves across the country, raising troubling questions about local collaboration in the insecurity ravaging several communities

According to reports, security operatives arrested the King of Alabe and his queen after a raid on the palace, which allegedly uncovered over ₦90 million in cash, while more than ₦30 million was reportedly traced to the queen’s account. The King of Babanla and some of his wives were also said to have been taken into custody over alleged involvement in criminal activities. The allegations are still under investigation, and the suspects remain entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court.

Nevertheless, the development reinforces what security experts have long maintained: banditry and kidnapping cannot

Across the world, from Colombia to Mexico and parts of the Sahel, criminal enterprises survive through the assistance of informants, financiers, logistics suppliers and respected individuals who provide cover for illicit activities. Terrorism and banditry are rarely sustained by armed men alone.

For years, public narratives have often attributed attacks solely to ethnic or religious identities. However, repeated arrests across Nigeria have shown that criminality cuts across tribes, religions and social classes. Criminals exploit ethnicity and religion as shields while pursuing economic gains.

If the allegations against the royal figures are eventually established in court, the implications would be profound. Traditional institutions have historically served as custodians of culture, morality and community security. Their influence commands respect and trust among the people. Any abuse of such positions represents not merely a criminal offence but a betrayal of communal confidence.

This is why security agencies must deepen intelligence-driven operations and follow financial trails rather than relying solely on armed confrontations. The growing sophistication of criminal networks demands the integration of financial intelligence, cyber surveillance and community-based information gathering.

At the same time, Nigerians should avoid rushing to conclusions or using isolated cases to stigmatise entire ethnic groups or traditional institutions. Thousands of traditional rulers across the country continue to serve as valuable partners in maintaining peace and providing intelligence to security agencies.

The Kwara arrests, if proven, underscore an uncomfortable reality: insecurity is not sustained only in forests; it can also find protection among respected faces within society.

Banditry survives on collaboration.

And wherever such collaborators are found—whether in villages, cities, business circles or even royal palaces—the law must prevail without fear or favour.

For no title, no throne and no status should be higher than the security of innocent Nigerians.
