U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken out following a dramatic security incident near the White House, describing the presidency as “the hardest job” after what authorities believe was an attempted attack.
Speaking at a press briefing shortly after the incident, Trump revealed that an armed suspect charged a security checkpoint before being stopped by officers of the United States Secret Service.
“A man with multiple weapons charged the checkpoint and was taken down,” Trump said, describing the suspect as a “very sick person.”
According to officials, a Secret Service officer was shot during the confrontation but survived thanks to protective gear.
“He was saved by his bulletproof vest and is doing great,” the president added.
The incident occurred late Saturday during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, where gunfire near a screening area caused panic and led to the evacuation of guests, journalists, and top officials.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen, who has since been arrested and is expected to face multiple charges, including use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, said the suspect appeared intent on causing significant harm but was stopped before further damage could be done.
Reflecting on the incident, Trump called for calm and urged Americans to embrace peaceful ways of resolving differences.
“This is not the first time our republic has faced such threats,” he said. “We must remain committed to peace.”
When asked whether he believed he was the intended target, Trump responded cautiously, saying, “I guess.”
He also acknowledged the risks that come with leadership, noting that even the highest levels of security cannot eliminate all threats.
Despite the scare, the president insisted the incident would not affect his policies or decision-making, including ongoing international tensions.
The Secret Service confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the suspect’s motive.
The incident adds to growing concerns over political violence in the United States, coming amid a series of threats and security challenges in recent years.
