Kano Assembly member Shuwaki resigns from APC, joins PDP
The member representing Tudun Wada Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Sule Lawan Shuwaki, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Shuwaki’s resignation letter was presented before the Assembly during Monday’s plenary by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore.
In the letter, the lawmaker said his decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultation” with his political associates, supporters and family members.
He thanked the APC leadership at the ward, local government, state and national levels for the opportunities and support he received during his membership of the party.
Shuwaki, however, said he had chosen to pursue a new political direction based on his personal convictions.
The lawmaker had reportedly moved to the PDP several months ago, but political consultations delayed the formal presentation of his resignation letter to the Assembly.
“I brought this letter to present it before the Assembly regarding my movement from the APC to the PDP,” Shuwaki said.
He also urged members of the public to maintain unity and goodwill despite political differences.
Falgore said the Assembly leadership had held several consultations with Shuwaki in an effort to determine whether he would proceed with his decision to leave the APC.
According to the Speaker, Shuwaki remained firm in his decision, leading to the formal presentation of the resignation letter during Monday’s sitting.
Shuwaki’s defection leaves the Kano State House of Assembly with 37 APC members, two members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and one PDP member, bringing the total number of lawmakers in the 40-member Assembly.
