MALI DEFENCE MINISTER KILLED IN COORDINATED TERROR ATTACKS

Mali has been thrown into crisis after coordinated attacks by jihadist and separatist groups reportedly killed the country’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, in a wave of violence that struck multiple locations, including parts of the capital, Bamako.

According to reports from Premium Times and other international sources, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) exploded outside Mr Camara’s residence on Saturday in what is believed to be a rare joint operation involving fighters of Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked group in the Sahel, and the Azawad Liberation Front.

Sources quoted by Al Jazeera said Camara died from injuries sustained in the blast, marking a major blow to Mali’s military leadership, as he was widely regarded as a key figure in the coup that brought the ruling junta to power.

The Malian military confirmed that attacks took place in several locations and said security forces responded swiftly, claiming that many of the attackers were “neutralised.”

Gunfire and explosions were reported in Kati, near Bamako’s main military base, as well as around the capital’s airport and other strategic installations. Authorities temporarily shut down Airbase 101 as a precaution, while reports also emerged—yet unverified—of a military helicopter being downed during the chaos.

In the aftermath, security was tightened across the capital, with residents urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unconfirmed information. Meanwhile, the United States Embassy in Mali issued a travel advisory warning citizens against visiting the country due to the rapidly deteriorating security situation.

The attack highlights the continued strength of extremist groups operating across the Sahel, particularly JNIM and Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP), both of which have intensified assaults on military and civilian targets in recent years. Analysts say the groups have become increasingly capable of launching coordinated operations, blocking supply routes, and exerting influence over rural communities where state presence is weak.

Despite the severity of Saturday’s events, some security experts caution against interpreting the attacks as a sign of imminent state collapse, noting that government forces and allied units have since regained control of parts of the affected areas.

Reports indicate that calm has gradually returned to Bamako and surrounding areas following military intervention, although tensions remain high as investigations and security operations continue.
