The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that his experiences as a litigant before appellate courts have greatly improved his understanding of legal practice and strengthened his respect for appellate judicial processes.

Wike made the statement on Wednesday in Abuja during the public presentation of “Ukala’s Manual on Appellate Practice” authored by Emmanuel C. Ukala, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Garki.
He explained that his repeated involvement in legal disputes at the appellate level gave him first-hand exposure to the discipline, structure, and intellectual rigor required in higher courts.

According to him, such experiences helped him appreciate the difference between trial and appellate advocacy, noting that the latter demands greater precision, deeper reasoning, and strict adherence to legal principles.
Wike, who is a Life Bencher and trained lawyer, said his time in active legal practice and his appearances in court as a litigant—not just as counsel—offered him a unique perspective on the justice system.
He described the legal profession as one that requires continuous learning and discipline, especially for those who engage in appellate litigation.

The minister also endorsed the newly presented manual, describing it as a practical and useful guide for both young and experienced lawyers rather than a purely academic text.
He said the book covers key aspects of appellate practice, including appeals, briefs of argument, procedural requirements, and advocacy techniques.
Wike also revealed that he began his legal career at the author’s law firm, noting that the experience played a major role in shaping his professional values.

He encouraged young lawyers to study the book seriously and apply its lessons, stressing that excellence in law requires consistent effort and commitment.
The event was attended by senior members of the judiciary, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the President of the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court justices, Court of Appeal justices, members of the Body of Benchers, and Senior Advocates of Nigeria.
