AS BIG TECH SHOWERS EMPLOYEES WITH PERKS TO WIN THE TALENT WAR, NVIDIA BUILT A NEARLY $5 TRILLION COMPANY BY MAKING PEOPLE PAY FOR THEIR OWN LUNCH

Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company by market capitalisation, has drawn attention for maintaining a workplace policy that differs from many major technology firms by requiring employees to pay for some food and beverages at its headquarters.

The AI chipmaker, led by Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang, does not offer completely free meals like several other Silicon Valley giants. Instead, cafeteria meals are subsidised, while employees also pay for certain bottled drinks and beverages sold at on-site cafés.

The policy recently gained attention after software engineer and technology writer Gergely Orosz shared his observations following a visit to Nvidia’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California.

According to former employees, the company’s food policy has remained largely unchanged for more than a decade, with meals offered at subsidised prices rather than being provided free of charge.

The approach contrasts with companies such as Google, which continues to provide free breakfast, lunch and dinner across many of its campuses. Google has long argued that shared meals encourage collaboration, helping employees from different teams exchange ideas and build stronger working relationships.

Nvidia’s workplace culture, however, is widely seen as reflecting the philosophy of its co-founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, who is known for his demanding work ethic and emphasis on discipline and long-term performance.

Huang has previously said he continues to operate with a sense of urgency despite Nvidia’s enormous success, explaining that the feeling of uncertainty has remained throughout the company’s history.

He has also encouraged young professionals to embrace challenges and discomfort, arguing that difficult experiences often lead to personal growth and better outcomes.

Across the technology industry, many companies have gradually reduced some of the generous workplace perks that once defined Silicon Valley. Several firms have scaled back free meal programmes and other employee benefits as part of broader cost-cutting measures.

While Nvidia may spend less on complimentary workplace perks, the company offers employees one of the industry’s most attractive stock purchase programmes. The plan allows eligible employees to buy company shares at a discounted price, giving many long-term staff significant financial gains as Nvidia’s stock has experienced remarkable growth in recent years.

For many employees, the value created through stock ownership has far outweighed the absence of free meals, making equity one of the company’s most rewarding workplace benefits.
