Aanuoluwa Odole has shared her inspiring journey to earning a double first-class degree from the University of Ibadan and the Nigerian Law School, describing the achievement as both fulfilling and deeply rewarding.
Reflecting on her experience, Odole described herself as naturally curious and expressive, someone who enjoys exploring ideas and learning in unconventional ways. She recalled initially hoping to be posted to the Abuja campus of the Nigerian Law School because of its reputation for being less stressful, but she was instead assigned to the Lagos campus, which many students considered more demanding.
Despite early concerns and the intense stories she had heard about the programme, she said she resolved to approach the experience positively and focus on making the best of it.
According to Odole, adapting her study habits became one of the most important parts of succeeding in law school. She explained that while she had previously relied on last-minute reading during university, she quickly realised the rigorous nature of law school required a more structured and consistent approach.
She developed a flexible study system that allowed her to gradually increase her reading intensity while still maintaining methods that suited her personally. Rather than following trends or copying others, she prioritised understanding what worked best for her learning style.
Odole revealed that she avoided joining mentorship programmes and did not rely heavily on textbooks, choosing instead to adjust her study materials and methods based on effectiveness. She also created a Notion tracker to monitor her understanding of topics and used practice questions to identify areas requiring more attention.
She admitted that some courses, especially Corporate Law Practice, tested her emotionally and mentally, recalling moments when she felt overwhelmed and uncertain about her performance. Despite the pressure, she maintained habits that helped her cope, including ensuring she got enough sleep.
Beyond academics, she said one of the most valuable parts of law school was the relationships and experiences she gained along the way.
Looking ahead, Odole expressed optimism about the opportunities her achievements could create for her career, saying she hopes to build a successful future doing work she genuinely enjoys.
Offering advice to aspiring law students, she encouraged them to remain true to themselves and avoid forcing study methods that do not suit them. She also stressed the importance of prioritising health and finding ways to enjoy the demanding journey of legal education.
