DELTA TENSION DEEPENS AS POLICE SHOOT ANOTHER MAN DAYS AFTER MENE OGIDI KILLING

Tension has continued to grow in Asaba following the alleged shooting of a young man identified as Aboy Odili by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the police command.

The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in the Delta State capital.

A video currently circulating online shows the victim seated on the ground moments after the shooting, while residents gathered around the scene in shock. In the footage, a voice is heard saying, “Police just shot someone. This is what is happening live in Asaba.”

As of the time of filing this report, the police are yet to release an official statement on the incident, and the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

The development comes only days after another controversial police killing involving Mene Ogidi, which sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over police brutality in the country.

In that incident, a viral video showed the 28-year-old Ogidi with his hands cuffed behind his back while pleading for mercy before he was allegedly shot by a police officer. A police vehicle seen in the footage carried the inscription, “Nigerian Police Force, Effurun Area Command, Delta State.”

Reacting to the earlier case, the police said Ogidi had been arrested while allegedly trying to transport a parcel suspected to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

However, the officer who led the operation, ASP Nuhu Usman, was later found to have acted against established police procedures. According to the police authorities, the officer violated Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure by discharging his firearm, leading to the suspect’s death.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu subsequently approved the dismissal and prosecution of the officer.

“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” the IGP said while addressing journalists in Abuja.

He added that officers found guilty of unlawful killings would face both disciplinary action and criminal prosecution.

With the latest incident in Asaba, concerns are once again mounting over police conduct, as many Nigerians continue to demand accountability and an end to alleged extrajudicial killings.
