BREAKING: ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIMES COMMISSION ARRESTS ENERGY COMMISSION DG MUSTAPHA ABDULLAHI OVER ALLEGED N500BN FRAUD

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, over alleged money laundering involving more than N500 billion.

The anti-graft agency is said to have taken Abdullahi into custody in Abuja on Wednesday as investigations into the allegations continue.

Abdullahi was appointed Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023 after spending over a decade at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The development follows earlier corruption allegations raised in December 2025 by the Network Against Corruption and Drug Trafficking (NACAT), a civil society organisation.

The group had petitioned President Tinubu, the EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), accusing the Energy Commission boss of involvement in questionable contract awards linked to solar streetlight projects worth hundreds of millions of naira.

According to the organisation, five companies allegedly connected to the contracts were registered within the same period and reportedly shared similar addresses and directors in Abuja.

NACAT also alleged that procurement procedures were violated in the contract process, describing the situation as a serious abuse of public trust.
