Entertainment Region highlights key facts about Nigerian-born visual artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, whose exceptional artistic talent has earned her global recognition, including acknowledgement from former United States President Barack Obama.

Njideka Akunyili Crosby is a renowned Nigerian visual artist based in Los Angeles, California. Through her unique artworks, she explores themes surrounding identity, migration, culture, and the experience of living between two worlds.

Her creative style combines collage, photo transfers, painting, and mixed-media techniques to portray the relationship between her Nigerian heritage and her adopted life in the United States. Her works often reflect the challenges and complexities of navigating life between African and Western cultures.

Born and raised in Enugu State, Nigeria, Njideka is the daughter of the late Dora Akunyili, former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and Dr. Chike Akunyili, a medical doctor.

She initially moved to the United States with plans to pursue a career in medicine. However, during her final year at Swarthmore College, she discovered her passion for art after realizing that she enjoyed her studio courses more than her science classes, including organic chemistry.

Following her passion, Njideka went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from Yale University School of Art, where she further developed her artistic skills.

The artist has often spoken about her desire to use her work to share her personal experiences as a Nigerian living in the diaspora. Through her paintings, she tells stories about family, belonging, cultural exchange, and the emotional realities of migration.

Over the years, Njideka Akunyili Crosby has received international acclaim for her contributions to contemporary art. Her works have been displayed in major galleries and museums around the world, earning her recognition as one of the most influential contemporary African artists.

In 2018, Njideka Akunyili Crosby reached another major milestone in her artistic career after being commissioned to create a large-scale mural for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

The monumental artwork showcased her signature technique of blending painting, collage, printmaking, and drawing to create detailed and layered visual narratives. She became the second artist selected to produce a mural for the museum’s site under its new public art initiative.

Her growing influence in the global art scene was further highlighted in 2022 when her work was featured in the Women Painting Women exhibition, which celebrated the contributions of female artists in contemporary painting.

In 2026, Akunyili Crosby received one of the biggest recognitions of her career after she was commissioned by the Obama Foundation to create a portrait of former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

The portrait was unveiled and is set to be displayed in the main lobby of the Obama Presidential Center. The commission further cemented Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s status as one of the most celebrated contemporary artists of Nigerian descent, highlighting her ability to use art as a bridge between cultures, histories, and personal experiences.

In a post that generated 18 million impressions, Barack Obama wrote:

This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.”
