Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru has said the inauguration of a 504-kilowatt-hour (kWh) interconnected mini-grid in Epe, alongside the groundbreaking for its planned five-megawatt (MW) expansion, will boost economic growth, create employment opportunities, and improve the business environment in the area.
The electricity project, delivered through a partnership involving the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the European Union (EU), and the German Government through GIZ, is aimed at improving access to reliable power for residents and businesses in Epe, Lagos State.

The initiative is expected to enhance electricity supply for homes, businesses, and productive sectors, while supporting enterprise development and improving the quality of life within the community.
Represented by former Lagos State House of Assembly Chief Whip, Abdulateef Rotimi Abiru, the senator explained that the project was the result of over four years of advocacy, consultations, and collaboration to ensure Epe benefited from the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS).
He described the project as a major milestone in tackling the long-standing electricity challenges facing Epe and unlocking the area’s economic potential.

According to Abiru, the newly commissioned 504kWh mini-grid is only the first phase of a larger power initiative, while the proposed 5MW expansion will significantly increase electricity capacity to meet the growing energy demands of the community.
He noted that the expanded power infrastructure will provide more reliable electricity to businesses, agro-processing companies, fish traders, artisans, schools, healthcare facilities, and thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises that have struggled with inadequate power supply over the years.
The senator praised the Rural Electrification Agency, the European Union, and GIZ for partnering to deliver the project, describing the collaboration as a strong example of sustainable development through international cooperation.

Abiru also linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to expand electricity access and improve power infrastructure nationwide, stating that reforms in the energy sector are attracting investments in critical infrastructure.

He said the project demonstrates how government policies can directly improve the lives of citizens by expanding access to reliable electricity and supporting economic development.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to implementing people-focused projects that address the needs of residents across Lagos East Senatorial District and encouraged the public to protect public infrastructure while supporting development initiatives.
