Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was among those who saw Koroma off before his departure, describing the former Sierra Leonean leader as a close friend and brother.

Koroma left Sierra Leone for Nigeria in January 2024 after being accused of treason and other offences linked to the November 2023 attacks in Freetown. He had initially travelled to Nigeria for medical treatment after receiving permission from Sierra Leonean authorities.

The Sierra Leonean government discontinued the criminal case against him in July 2026, clearing the way for his return home.

Jonathan said Nigeria had provided Koroma with support and friendship during his stay and expressed satisfaction that he was finally returning to Freetown.

Koroma had earlier said he was open to consultations and advice following his return, as the country continues efforts towards peace and national reconciliation.
