Former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has reportedly undergone knee surgery in India.
The former military leader, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1998 to 1999, travelled to India for medical treatment following a knee-related condition.
Abubakar, who is also the Chairman of the National Peace Committee, has previously received medical attention abroad for health-related concerns.
Reports indicate that the former Head of State underwent the knee procedure at a hospital in India as part of efforts to address the condition and improve his mobility.
The development comes amid renewed public attention surrounding Abubakar’s health after reports and online discussions about his medical treatment surfaced.
Abubakar has had previous health-related episodes that required treatment outside Nigeria. In 2022, he confirmed that he had been hospitalised abroad after developing a swollen knee that affected his mobility.
More recently, reports in July 2025 indicated that he had been admitted to a hospital in London, where he later confirmed that he had received treatment and had been discharged.
The latest development concerns his knee treatment in India, although details about the specific procedure, hospital and his current condition have not been fully disclosed publicly.
Abdulsalami Abubakar remains an influential elder statesman in Nigeria and has continued to participate in national peace and reconciliation efforts through the National Peace Committee.
